President McConnell’s strong stance on NTTF promotions and salaries

On August 21st, 2019, in her first campus-wide email to faculty, President McConnell took a strong stance in supporting non-tenure track faculty (NTTF) by upholding commitments made previously by senior administration to immediately increase the base salary of NTTF and allow all promotion-eligible NTTF to apply for promotion during the 2019/20 academic year. This was welcome news across campus amid concerns that there would be a staggered ‘roll-out’ of promotion applications, which would have required many promotion-eligible NTTF to wait up to an additional five years before being able to apply.

In addition, President McConnell announced the creation of a campus-wide committee who would be charged with guiding and assisting senior administration through the implementation of the approved Faculty Manual changes. This will ensure that the implementation of the new promotion process, opportunities for governance, and hiring and retention of NTTF, are undertaken in a timely manner across campus. This committee will convene listening sessions in the coming months to share its findings and recommendations on how to best support NTTF, department chairs and deans in the implementation of the promotion process.

Below is a link to the pdf shared by President McConnell which outlines the expected process, selection criteria, and expectations to be followed by NTTF and their respective departments and colleges. Special reference to Senior Teaching Appointments (STAs) is also included.
